Day 16

Colossians 3:7-9

“You used to do these things when your life was still a part of this world. But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all it’s wicked deeds.”

Thank you, God, for renewing us! Paul continues to say to followers of Jesus that it’s important to embrace their new identity in Jesus and live a God-honoring life. To best do that, there are some things we need to let go of because they’re not helpful, life-giving, or lead to peace. We’re putting off the old self and becoming more like Jesus. This is sanctification and a daily act of surrendering to God.

As we continue to grow in our faith, we become uncomfortable with our sin and more aware of it. We become more inclined to turn away from the things that aren’t God’s best for us which leads to sin. While it’s okay to be angry, it’s what you choose to do with that anger that reflects your heart posture! Anger, left unchecked, grows in malice and slander. Malice can arise from an unresolved issue and grows, taking root in your thoughts, and controlling your emotions and intentions. Slander is making a false spoken statement that damages a person's reputation. Your words are powerful. What if, instead, you sought forgiveness and reconciliation and chose to talk things out?

Here are a few good check-in questions for when you feel anger rising inside you:

  • Are my thoughts, words, and actions aligning with God’s Word and who He says I am?
  • Where is my integrity and character in all of this?
  • Are the words I’m speaking destroying someone or building them up?
  • What am I feeling in my body when I sense anger?
In the moments when you’re angry and could slander someone, or speak malicious words, take a deep breath and remind yourself that they are made in the image of God just like you.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” Invite Jesus into the process of reshaping your thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors. Jesus has made you new, celebrate and embrace that!

Today, reflect on your renewal and who you’ve become since asking Jesus to be the leader of your life. When your old life or familiar patterns try to return, remind yourself of 2 Corinthians 5:17. Take it one step further by memorizing this verse; you may need to say it multiple times a day.

Remember, Jesus is with you; You can ask Him to help you, and He will!
